What is a Prayer Closet? Free Printable Prayer Aids

One of my spiritual goals for 2021 is to improve my prayer life. I am going to do this by setting up my prayer closet or war room. My prayer closet will be a place where I will have solitude, praise God, and physically see my praises and supplications to the Lord.

What is a Prayer Closet?

When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to our Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:6

A prayer closet is basically any room or space where you can go and be alone to pray. It doesn’t have to be a closet. Mine is just going to be my bathroom since I have my own. It does have to be private just so you can be free of distractions.

Be sure the room is comfortable for you to be in. You don’t have to pray on your knees or on the floor.

Some people decorate their space. I am planning on making cards with verses so I can change them out frequently.

You will also want your Bible and a prayer journal with you. Try to have a physical Bible so you don’t get distracted by all the other apps on your phone. My prayer journal is not going to be a book type journal but rather a small clipboard and other random prayer lists posted on my bathroom wall.

My prayer room is very much inspired by the movie War Room. If you haven’t seen it yet, you need to. It will inspire you to pray more. In the movie, an older woman showed a younger woman going through trials about how to use a prayer room.

The young woman in the movie had some problems and through prayer her life got better. Of course, that is a movie where most problems get solved within 2 hours. What I loved most though was that by her praying in her closet, her daughter started doing the same.

Printable Praise Sheet

“O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure.” Isaiah 25:1

I love praying the ACTS method and want to keep an ongoing praise sheet so that I can always see how God is working in my life. I want to see the small things and the big things.

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” Matthew 7:7-11

I want to record my prayer requests. Usually, I write down what other people want me to pray for and I will still do that. I rarely write down what I need and desire. I think writing it down and really talking to God about my problems will really help a lot.

I want to have verses that are important to what I am praying for all around me in my prayer closet. I am sharing with you a pretty template you can use to write important verses on. For example, if I am concentrating on praying for a specific part of my husband’s life I want verses that help put my desires into words.

Do I Really Need All This to Pray to God?

“Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” Matthew 6:9-13

When I think about routines like making breakfast, packing a suitcase, or getting ready in the morning they all involve intentionality. There is a place, specific tools, and a method to getting the job done. Can you pack a suitcase in the living room? Sure but it would sure be a lot easier in the bedroom or laundry room where the clothes are.

God has given us a specific way to pray, the Lord’s prayer. The printables I have shared with you are just helpful, personal guides for that prayer. Praying in a specific spot with all the helps you need to have a conversation with God is a perfect way to improve your relationship with Him.
